In The Era Of Reconstruction, Stampp’s book showed that the period following the Civil War was marked not only by “devastation of the white south by the north but rather a clear-eyed and determined attempt to fulfill  emancipation  after the Ameri  can Civil War.”  The eleven states that made the Confederacy somehow had to be restored to their positions in the Union. President Lincoln the Congress tried giving them roles that “emancipated Negroes” should play.  This book is the tale of the “subsequent development of the South.”
